The Most Reliable Candlestick Patterns — Based on Data
Most lists of "best candlestick patterns" are based on opinion. This list is based on backtesting data — 1,847 pattern occurrences across BTC, ETH, SOL, and BNB on 4H and 1D timeframes from January 2020 to December 2024. Only patterns at key support/resistance levels were counted.
Above: The top 5 candlestick patterns ranked by win rate from backtesting. All patterns tested at key support/resistance levels on 4H and 1D timeframes.
#1 — Bullish Engulfing (Win Rate: 71%)
The Bullish Engulfing tops the list with a 71% win rate in this dataset and 2.0:1 average risk:reward. Its reliability comes from its clear mechanical logic: the second candle must completely engulf the first, representing a decisive shift from selling to buying pressure. This is not ambiguous — either the candle engulfs or it does not.
Above: Bullish Engulfing at support on BTC/USDT 4H — the #1 most reliable candlestick pattern based on backtesting.
#2 — Bearish Engulfing (Win Rate: 70%)
The mirror image of the Bullish Engulfing, with nearly identical statistics. The 1% lower win rate reflects the slight asymmetry in crypto markets, which historically trend upward over time.
#3 — Morning Star (Win Rate: 68%)
The Morning Star's three-candle structure provides more confirmation than single or two-candle patterns. The star candle is the key — it must be small-bodied, showing that the previous trend's momentum has stalled before the reversal candle appears.
Above: Morning Star at support on ETH/USDT 1D — the #3 most reliable pattern. The three-candle structure provides strong confirmation of the reversal.
#4 — Evening Star (Win Rate: 68%)
Tied with the Morning Star at 68%, the Evening Star is the most reliable bearish three-candle pattern. It performs best on the daily timeframe at major resistance levels.
#5 — Hammer (Win Rate: 65%)
The Hammer is the most common pattern on this list, appearing frequently on all timeframes. Its single-candle nature means it forms quickly, providing more trading opportunities than three-candle patterns. The long lower shadow must be at least 2x the body length.
Sample Size and Statistical Confidence
Above: Sample sizes for each pattern in the backtest. Larger sample sizes provide higher statistical confidence in the win rate figures.
