About Alexey
Alexey Khmelev is a professional trader, analyst, and the founder of YouPattern — a free visual encyclopedia of trading patterns used by traders worldwide. With over 15 years of hands-on experience across equity markets, forex, and cryptocurrency, Alexey has developed a deep, data-driven understanding of how price patterns form, evolve, and resolve.
Alexey holds a university degree in Finance and Credit and carries the status of a Certified Qualified Investor — a professional designation that requires demonstrated trading experience, a qualifying portfolio size, and verified financial knowledge. This status grants access to professional-grade instruments not available to retail investors.
Trading Background
Alexey began his trading career in the early 2000s, initially focusing on equity markets before expanding into international stocks, commodities, and eventually cryptocurrency markets. Over 15 years of active trading, he has developed and refined systematic approaches to pattern recognition, combining classical technical analysis with quantitative backtesting.
His trading methodology is built on three pillars: pattern context (where in the trend does the pattern appear), volume confirmation (is institutional money supporting the move), and risk-defined entries (every trade has a predefined stop and target before execution). This framework underpins all the content and statistics published on YouPattern.
Alexey has traded through multiple market cycles — the 2008 financial crisis, the 2017–2018 crypto bull and bear market, the COVID crash of 2020, and the 2022 crypto winter — giving him a practical understanding of how patterns perform under different volatility regimes.
Why YouPattern Was Created
The idea for YouPattern came from a frustration Alexey experienced repeatedly: most pattern resources online are either too theoretical (textbook definitions with no real examples) or too vague (generic descriptions without specific identification rules). After years of maintaining personal reference sheets and backtesting databases, he decided to build the resource he always wished existed.
Every pattern on YouPattern is documented with:
- A programmatically generated ideal diagram showing the exact geometric structure
- Real chart examples drawn from historical Binance OHLCV data, primarily BTC/USDT, ETH/USDT, SOL/USDT, BNB/USDT and selected high-liquidity crypto pairs. Equity datasets are planned but not currently published.
- Specific identification rules — not "look for a small body" but exact ratios and conditions
- Backtest-informed statistics with disclosed methodology, sample size, and market conditions
- Common false positives — examples of what the pattern is NOT
Methodology & Data Transparency
All diagrams on YouPattern are generated programmatically using Python (matplotlib + mplfinance), ensuring consistency and reproducibility. Real chart examples are selected algorithmically from historical data using pattern-detection scripts, then manually reviewed by Alexey to confirm validity.
Statistical data (reversal rates, average gains, failure rates) is derived from backtests conducted on BTC/USDT, ETH/USDT, SOL/USDT, and BNB/USDT over the 2018–2026 period using Daily (1D), 4-Hour (4H), and Weekly (1W) timeframes depending on the pattern type. Current published examples use cryptocurrency data only; equity datasets are planned for future updates. Full methodology is documented on the Methodology page.
Where statistics are sourced from published research (e.g., Thomas Bulkowski's Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns), the source is explicitly cited. Alexey's own backtests are clearly distinguished from third-party research.

Editorial Standards
All content on YouPattern is written and reviewed by Alexey personally. The site does not publish AI-generated content without human review and validation. Every statistical claim is backed by a disclosed source or a documented backtest. Pages are updated when new data changes the statistical picture.
